Software Windows Vista SP1 Performance: Mixed Results

On the other side of things, CNET reports the SP1 update has somehow created a performance degradation in copy times to external USB 2.0 hard drives. Something is going wrong in Windows Vista SP1 during USB copies, and the issue is currently under investigation. Meanwhile Windows Vista SP1 takes a 40 to 50 percent performance hit in this type of file copies, when compared to base Windows Vista. Testers did comment on SP1's rather good job in delivering bug fixes. This leads to a more stable environment. Still, feelings towards SP1 will probably depend heavily on users' expectations as it delivers a mixed bag of performance changes. .

Don't be scared of digital

Question: I'm worried about the digital TV transition. Will digital-to-analog television signal converters be available? I heard the government would be helping out. Can you explain?

Answer: In February 2009, all television broadcasts will go digital. Owners of analog televisions will need a digital conversion box. Otherwise, you won't be able to receive over-the-air television signals. This issue only applies to those using an antenna. Converter boxes will be widely available before the transition. The government has a program to help. It's offering coupons to offset the cost of a converter box. You must apply for a coupon and can find a link to the program at www.tulsaworld.com/komandonews.

Q: You often mention the benefit of 802.11n over 802.11b and 802.11g.

LL Continues Her Walk Down Pre-Rehab Memory Lane

Lindsay and her leggings were reunited yesterday but not for long. Also missing in action is her boy Riley. We don't blame her for wanting a little break after taking him home for Thanksgiving, especially if he were acting like a jerk. In fact, LL may already be weighing her other options. Apparently she was spotted leaving Matsuhisa restaurant on Wednesday just a few minutes after her ex (and Mary-Kate's, and Paris'), Stavros Niarchos, walked out. Of course, this could just be a coincidence, or a friendly meal. From Samantha to Stavros in one night, LL seems to be reconnecting with some of her old friends. Those two might not be the best influences, but we are starting to think Riley's days are numbered.

More of LL in her dark ensemble, so just read more

Review: Treo 700p (with Sprint or Verizon Wireless service)

On the business side, the device comes with VersaMail to connect to common Internet mail providers but will support POP and IMAP mail. For corporate mail, the device supports Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync (Exchange 2003). Other third-party e-mail providers (including Good Technology) have announced support for the 700p. Once you get your e-mail, the Documents To Go application continues to support the viewing of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and PDF file attachments, and users can edit Word and Excel documents on the device.

As a personal entertainment device, the 700p includes a 1.3-megapixel camera/camcorder and the Pocket Tunes digital audio player, which can play music from a Secure Digital card. The Sprint TV application was OK; watching live TV or other video clips was hit or miss (sometimes the system timed out trying to connect, or I got jittery video).
