Auto Chrysler, GM Feel Effects of CAFE Updates

Despite the upgraded power and improved fuel economy, vehicles like the next generation Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300 will likely miss out on Hemi power. Instead, Chrysler is developing new "Phoenix" high-output V6 engine to take the place of the Hemi. The engines will feature dual overhead cams, variable valve timing and cylinder deactivation. Ranging-topping variants are likely to surpass 300 HP, like its competitors, and provide better fuel economy than its Hemi counterpart.

When it comes to actual vehicle platforms, General Motors is already taking steps to comply with the update CAFE. The company originally planned to resurrect the Pontiac GTO -- again -- using the same underpinnings as the upcoming Chevrolet Camaro and Pontiac G8. Those plans are now shelved.

"I think (the Monaro/Pontiac GTO) is gone for now," said GM's Bob Lutz.

Nick Robinson's Newslog

As your blog post suggests, all this leads to a further question; is this sort of ready access to our information mirrored in other Government agencies? After all, in an age of increasing job cuts in the Civil Service, we now know the price that those savings are costing us.

After Bearing Failure, Birmingham Bridge To Partially Reopen

The Birmingham Bridge was opened to traffic in 1976 and carries about 23,000 vehicles per day over the Monongahela River, connecting Oakland with the South Side.

Signs have been posted to guide motorists around the closed structure.

The suggested detour is:

Outbound

From Fifth Avenue take Moultrie Street to Forbes Avenue. Make right onto Brady Street. From Brady Street, make right onto Second Avenue. Continue on Second Avenue to the 10th Street Bridge. Take 10th Street Bridge to East Carson Street.

Inbound

Follow same detour in opposite direction.

The Hot Metal Bridge is another option for a detour.

Bonds' exit lifts restrictions on Roberts' thievery

Roberts came to realize that his green light came with a Bonds restrictor plate. He wasn't truly free to take a base whenever it was there for the stealing.

"The way it played out ..." Roberts said, wearing a glum expression. "It was pretty clear we wanted him to get his at-bats. We weren't scoring runs early in the season, and he was our best chance. We had to put the brakes on, so he could get his opportunities."

There also was the little matter of the all-time home run record. As fans stood and cheered one of Bonds' at-bats, the last thing they wanted to see was the inning end on a swipe tag at second base.

"Even though Barry says it's OK to run, in the back of Dave's mind, my mind, the fans' minds, you don't want to take the bat out of Barry's hands," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said.

How a Pro Thinks About Investing in New Markets

A good example is Mitsubishi UFJ, Japan's largest bank, which has a price-to-earnings ratio in the high single digits. Management is reasonably good and improving; it's just that investors have become despondent with the domestic economy and the prospect for rising interest rates. But we see that as a cyclical setback, not a permanent one, so we're buying in now at a low valuation.

You're also buying in at a time when Japan's currency is hitting new highs against the dollar. Does that play into your strategy, too?

Every one of the target prices for the stocks we follow closely is dependent on currency changes. So big currency swings can change our holdings. Take Yamaha Motors, which we think is a great company; they make motorcycles, ATVs, and outboard motors. As the yen recently strengthened, we saw investors selling the stock on the expectation that it would impact overseas sales, which gave us an opportunity to add to our position.
