So, I go to a movie Saturday night. I have some friends in Waupaca and we always meet in Stevens Point, since that's half way between us. We don't get to see each other as often as we'd like, so we do a lot of catching up. We also like to pretend we're the cast of Mystery Science Theater 3000 and make fun of what we see on screen, if it's bad. And we're pop culture geeks so we talk about the actors, directors, special effects, etc. On top of that, my cell phone went off. I told the caller I'd call her back. But all of this happened BEFORE the movie, during the trailers, or previews of the upcoming films. Once the movie started we all hushed up, except for the occasional gasp. (we saw Sweeney Todd, which is really quite gross) Still, a man sitting directly in front of me turned around at the end of the last trailer and said, "OK, let's keep the comments to ourselves now that the movie is starting." I said "Yea, we planned on it once the movie started." After hearing the exchange, the group behind us (all adults) actually made several comments about the movie during the movie.
City’s water system must be a top priority
Gun tragedies an accepted part of living in America The tragic murders of five women in a Lane Bryant store in Tinley Park recently and two police officers and three others at a city council meeting in Kirkwood, Mo., Feb. 7 serve as a chilling reminder that any of us can be impacted by gun violence in this country, no matter where we are at any given moment. My prayers are with the families of all the victims. While there are certainly many factors involved in such heinous acts, the one fact that can’t be ignored is that guns are almost always used in these types of tragedies. Whether it’s a mall in Omaha, Neb., college campuses in Blacksburg, Va., or DeKalb, or a clothing store in Tinley Park, guns have been taking the lives of innocent victims at an alarming rate over the last year.

Enjoy winter's stark beauty in shades of gray
It can be hard to appreciate the stark beauty of winter. Storms sweep in with whirling snow on howls of wind broken only by occasional days of frozen silence. For many people, these gloomy weeks seem depressing and endless. But for anyone who loves taking black-and-white photographs, this winter has been a rare gift. Nature's elemental forces are revealed in a way they aren't during milder winters. .
Samsung unwraps GX-20 DSLR, new compacts
Samsung today became the latest in a series of camera makers to update their lines for the PMA photography show next week. At the top of the line, the GX-20 digital SLR is a close cousin to the similarly new Pentax K20D but with key differences; while it shares the same 14.6-megapixel, low-noise CMOS camera sensor as the K20D, the GX-20 includes a different on-camera interface and generates JPEG images differently than its Pentax sibling. The Samsung unit's physical design is also different and sports a dedicated RAW shooting button that produces an uncompressed shot even when the camera is normally set to JPEG mode. The GX-20 also boasts optical image stabilization and a dust removal system that works both actively through a shaking system and passively through a dust-repellant coating.
